Game of the Month (September 2025) - Hollow Knight: Silksong

September is a busy month each year for the CoconutWizard (me).  My birthday kicks off a new school year for the kids, and then a series of family birthdays and anniversaries progresses until mid-November.  The gaming space is also filled with great things this month, and it’s hard for me to pick just one to highlight as my anticipated game of the month.  The Mega Dads team is excited for some group gaming sessions with Everybody Golf: Hot Shots (September 5), Silent Hill f is coming to scare our pants off (September 25), and tactical rpg lovers like me are hyped for Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, while traditional rpg loves (also like me) should be keeping their eyes on Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter (September 19), which remakes the original first game in the Trails series in glorious 3D and looks GORGEOUS.

For MegaDads’ September 2025 Game of the Month, I’m going to go with a very much anticipated game that no one thought would ever be real (I’ll believe it when I get my hands on it!):  Hollow Knight: Silksong

Hollow Knight: Silksong is an action platformer Metroidvania (Castleroid?) game developed by Team Cherry, and is the long anticipated sequel to Hollow Knight.  This time around, you play as Hornet, a character that appeared in the first Hollow Knight game.  Just as in that game, she will explore new lands,  discover new powers and secrets, and battle in (likely) increasingly difficult battles against hordes of bugs and other creatures.  The images and videos of this game show it to be the same themes as the first:  a dark and melancholy adventure amidst a dead kingdom full of bizarre bugs and creatures.  I imagine the new protagonist will play in a similar style to the way we saw her previously, adding in her skills and talents to the original knights’ repertoire.

Hollow Knight: Silksong has had many people hyped since it was originally announced in 2019.  I only recently played through the first game this year, and once that game had its pincers in me, I was all-in.  I loved the art style and atmosphere, which Silksong seems to build upon, and it kept me coming back for more through the original game’s multiple endings.  Christopher Larkin’s music sets the mood and the atmosphere perfectly, and I’m looking forward to hearing the new score.  There were many rage-quits, as the original Hollow Knight fools you into thinking it’s a simple game until you start encountering the bosses and some of the more annoying creatures (the Mantises drove me crazy).  If Silksong is anything like the first in gameplay, it will appeal to gamers like me who get pulled away for long stretches of time and have to reacquaint yourself to the mechanics once returning. The controls to the original were simple and easy to learn, but as you gain more combinations of skills and powerups you quickly find more than one way to fight.  I’m only a recent fan, and it looks like I joined the crew just in time to get a surprise drop on my birthday this year.  Thanks for the gift, Team Cherry.

HollowKnight: Silksong is released on September 4, 2025 on PC, PS4/5, Switch, Switch 2, and Xbox.
